Our Impact

Mekedonia’s beneficiaries are homeless individuals gathered from various regions across the country, including Hawassa, Debre Zeit, Debre Libanos, Addis Ababa, and Guder. We take pride in being an Ethiopian charity with our headquarters in Addis Ababa. In addition to our main location, Mekedonia Homes has several branches in other regions of Ethiopia, including Harar, Gore, Dire Dawa, Adama, Gambella, Shashemene, Beke, and Adwa.

OUR SUCCESSES

Over the years, more than 400 elderly and mentally challenged residents have been successfully rehabilitated and have become productive members of the community at the Home. Many now work as security guards, caregivers, sanitation workers, drivers, hostesses, cashiers, tour guides, and in food preparation. Others have received training in various trades, including laboratory technicians, welders, cement workers, carpenters, and woodworkers. Additionally, some residents have learned skills such as weaving, sewing, tapestry and carpet making, broom and mop production, and even raising chickens. Others hold roles as supervisors, construction experts, and business administrators.

About Us

Mekedonia Charity Homes is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting those in need. Jember Gebrewahid serves as our U.S. representative, driving our mission forward from Ethiopia. Mekedonia Homes in Ethiopia was established by Biniam Belete in 2011 in Addis Ababa. Motivated by compassion, he began his journey by rescuing homeless individuals from the streets and providing them with food and shelter in his parents' home. As the organization grew, it made a significant impact on the lives of many, offering essential resources and support for reintegration into society. What began with just 35 individuals has blossomed into a thriving community of around 8,000 residents, including 3,100 elders, 1,450 bedridden individuals, 1,560 with mental disabilities, 1,190 with physical impairments, and 200 who are visually impaired.
